Mpumalanga, “the place where the sun rises” is situated in the Northeast of South Africa, bordered by the countries of Mozambique and Swaziland to the East and Gauteng to the West. Nelspruit (Mbombela) is the capital of Mpumalanga and the administrative and business centre of the Lowveld. Witbank (eMalahleni) is the biggest coal producer in Africa. Mpumalanga is home to the country’s major coal-fired power stations and produces about 80% of the country’s coal. Secunda is home to Sasol, an International integrated Energy and Chemical company, employing more than 34 000 employees across 37 countries. Barberton is the oldest gold-mining town in South Africa. Ermelo is the largest producer of wool in South Africa. Close to Sabie and Graskop, that provide a large part of the country's total requirement for forestry products, is Ngodwana, one of the country’s largest paper mills. Steel and vanadium is produced in Middelburg, also known as the “Stainless Steel Capital” of Africa.
The economy of Mpumalanga is further stimulated by a large Sugar industry at Malalane in the East. Piet Retief in the Southeast is a large producer of tropical fruit and sugar while Standerton in the South of the province is known for its large dairy industry. An abundance of citrus and subtropical fruit (mangoes, avocados, litchis, bananas, pawpaws, granadillas and guavas) as well as a nuts and vegetables are produced in Mpumalanga. Mbombela is the second-largest citrus-producing area in South Africa and responsible for one third of the country’s export in oranges. Groblersdal yield crops such as cotton, citrus, wheat, vegetables and tobacco. Carolina, Bethal and Ermelo is known as a sheep-farming area with sunflowers, maize, peanuts and potatoes also produced in the region.
Spectacular Tourist attractions such as the 3000 million year old Sudwala Caves, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window, The Three Rondavels, numerous historical sites, the world-renowned Kruger National Park with a diversity of wildlife unsurpassed anywhere else in the world, in the region attracts thousands of visitors from South African and abroad to the region annually.
