The North West Region, known as the Platinum Province lies in the Northern part of South Africa on the Botswana border. It is fringed by the Kalahari desert in the West, the Gauteng Province to the East and the Free State to the South. It is a flat region that largely consist of scattered trees and grassland. In the North East of the Province, the Magaliesburg mountain range extends about 130 kilometres from Pretoria to Rustenburg with the Vaal River forming the Province’s Southern border.
The North West, with a total area of 106 512 square kilometres, is South Africa’s fourth-smallest province and takes up 8.7% of the country’s land area. It has a population of 3.5 million people.
The capital of the Province is Mahikeng (formerly known as Mafeking) – a town well-known for the famous siege that took place during the Boer War and ended in a victory for the British. It is located near the Botswana border and forms a single urban area with Mmabatho, the neighbouring town. The biggest cities in the North West are Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom. Other main towns in the area are Rustenburg and Brits.
More than 80% of the Province’s economic activity takes place in the Southern region between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom and Rustenburg in the Eastern region
Major tourist attractions in the Province include the Pilanesberg National Park, the Madikwe Game Reserve, the Rustenburg Nature Reserve and the world famous Sun City - one of the world’s biggest entertainment centres, with a casino, concert halls, theatres, beaches, wave pool, a true to life reconstructed tropical rain forest, world-class hotels including the extraordinary Palace of the Lost City. Sun City, Africa’s premier holiday resort, is also home to two spectacular championship golf courses that host International Golf Tournaments and provide a challenge for every club in the bag.
Mining contributes 23.3% to the economy of the North West, and makes up more than a fifth of the South African mining industry as a whole. Ninety-four percent of the country's platinum is found in the Rustenburg and Brits districts, which produce more platinum than any other single area in the world. The North West Province also produce a quarter of South Africa's gold, as well as granite, marble, fluorspar and diamonds. The Platinum Corridor that stretches from Pretoria to Eastern Botswana accounts for over a third of the total employment in the Province.
The Marico Region and Stelland is well-known as cattle country. Some of the largest cattle herds are found at Stellaland situated near Vryburg. Fertile, mixed crop farming in the areas around Rustenburg and Brits contribute largely to food production in South Africa. The most important crops in the North West is maize and sunflowers.
