Situated in one of South Africa’s most beautiful provinces, the picturesque Eastern Cape, Port Alfred is famed as an idyllic seaside town built around the Kowie River mouth. Serving the Port Alfred community (and its holidaying guests during the high season), the Talk of the Town enjoys the reputation of being the go-to newspaper for local news, community news, local sports results, church and charitable organisation news, lifestyle features, entertainment news and anything in between. Additionally, the publication’s advertising sheets constitute a wealth of useful information regarding the latest retail and service offerings and, of course, specials.
Port Alfred, the “heart of the sunshine coast”, has long been regarded as the ideal town to retire to, and it is therefore no surprise that many of the town’s residents are retirees who enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the seaside. Other residents include local business owners (a large number of whom work in the town’s vibrant tourism industry), farmers, and even artists and craftspeople.
This region of the country is characterised by stretches of pristine beaches and stunning Eastern Cape scenery, and the people are extremely welcoming to the influx of visitors during the holiday seasons.
The Talk of the Town’s high quality editorial content has made it extremely popular amongst Port Alfred natives, and its extended distribution area includes other, equally appealing tourist destinations, most notably: Fish River, Kenton-on-Sea and Grahamstown. The Talk of the Town is distributed weekly on Thursdays, and has a print order of 4 500 copies for most of the year, but this is increased to 6 000 copies during the in-season.
