As South Africa’s leading community newspaper publishing house, Caxton CTP’s many and varied titles reach all corners of our beautiful country. Until 2005, however, one area of neglect had, for far too long, been overlooked: SA’s largest and most well-known Township, Soweto. A very pressing need for Soweto residents’ community news demands had to be addressed in a meaningful way, and it was thus that the Protea Urban News came into being. The vision of the newspaper was to provide residents with a community newspaper that was credible, accurate and reliable at all times. All indications were that this vision was achieved in a very short time-span, and the Protea Urban News received rave reviews from readers and advertisers alike. The tremendous response was proof of the market’s thirst for more, and 10 other Urban News titles were subsequently launched, including: The Dobsonville Urban News, Diepkloof Urban News, Chiawelo Urban News, Eldorado Urban News, Jabavu Urban News, Meadowlands Urban News, Orlando Urban News, Pimville Urban News, West Side Urban News and Zola Urban News.
The success of the Protea Urban News was replicated amongst the additional titles, and today the 11 Urban News publications reach a whopping total of almost 300 000 households and an estimated 1 492 500 happy readers. Given the Urban News’s relatively short lifespan to date, this exceptional achievement cannot be overstated.
As an Urban News publication, the Dobsonville Urban News built a solid reputation from the outset, and is renowned for its high quality reporting of news items that are relevant to the community it serves. With a print order of 32 500 copies that are distributed weekly (free-of-charge) to doorsteps and strategic collection points, the newspaper strives to achieve and maintain the very best standards of journalistic excellence and integrity. Moreover, with other media houses focused on sensationalistic and negative news cycles, the Dobsonville Urban News aims to highlight the many positives that pervade our society but are too often ignored.
In this way, the Dobsonville Urban News shines a spotlight on the commendable achievements and attractions of Soweto. The paper also opens itself to public dialogue, and strongly encourages readers to write in and express their views through a letters section.
The Dobsonville Urban News reaches the hands of an impressive and sizeable population of household expenditure decision makers, and as such, is an effective channel through which businesses and other advertisers can speak directly to an economically active audience. This is to say that as an advertising medium, the Dobsonville Urban News is in a favourable position within an area of fast economic growth and development, offering entrepreneurs and established business owners exciting prospects to grow their enterprises.
