South Africa of the 1980s was a country in turmoil; oppressive apartheid laws designated residential areas by race, political subversion was brutally suppressed, and to many the future held little promise of a better life. Glimmers of hope, however, began to appear and a new era slowly dawned in the early to mid-1990s – the establishment of a truly democratic state. It was during this period, in 1986, that Rising Sun founder and CEO, Vijay Maharaj, identified the need for a credible and reliable community newspaper that would serve the culturally rich and historically unique residents of “Indian only” areas. It was thus that Chatsworth Rising Sun was born.
Given the success and rapid uptake of the fledgling newspaper, the stable of publications grew to include new titles, all of which held true to Vijay’s original vision: that is, the Rising Sun newspapers would be committed to the creation of a non-racist, non-sexist society that South Africans so thoroughly deserved. Today, the stable is extremely proud of its past achievements, and looks forward to continuing in its role as a valued and respected member of the communities it serves.
Although the apartheid-era zoning laws no longer enforce racial segregation, many residents of previously “Indian only” areas remain South Africans of Indian descent, and as such, have news demands that are distinctive. In this respect, the Laudium Rising Sun consistently delivers editorial content that speaks to the experiences of its readers, and remains without peer.
In fact, the Laudium Rising Sun is the premier community newspaper in its area of distribution, having earned its impressive reputation by consistently producing high quality local news and maintaining high standards of journalistic excellence and integrity.
Owing to its high quality advertising inserts, the Laudium Rising Sun also functions as a source of information that an economically active market of household decision makers turn to before drawing up weekly and monthly shopping lists. Given its extensive reach, this makes the newspaper an outstandingly effective marketing channel.
