The reach of Caxton CTP’s community newspapers is exceptionally widespread in South Africa, and the company has become synonymous with premier quality local news. Until 2005, however, Caxton was yet to make significant in-roads into the media landscape of South Africa’s most famous and largest Township, Soweto. To address the community news needs of Soweto’s many residents, the Protea Urban News was launched. As with the titles falling under Caxton CTP’s stewardship, the Protea Urban News was well received by both readers and advertisers using the paper as a highly effective marketing channel. With the publication’s growing reputation as a premier local and community news source, and the need for further titles made clear, 10 new Urban News publications were established and distributed to the public free-of-charge, including: Meadowlands Urban News, Jabavu Urban News, Eldorado Urban News, Dobsonville Urban News, Diepkloof Urban News, Chiawelo Urban News, Orlando Urban News, Pimville Urban News, West Side Urban News and Zola Urban News.
As with the flagship title, the new additions received a very favourable reception, and were a welcome presence in the areas they respectively served. Today, the 11 Urban News publications enjoy a truly impressive combined readership of an estimated 1 492 500 Soweto residents, and have a combined print order of 300 000 copies distributed weekly to doorsteps and other accessible collection points.
The success and popularity of the Meadowlands Urban News, especially in such a relatively short time span, is proof of the high standards of journalistic excellence and integrity the paper has already entrenched in its culture. In this regard, the newspaper is firmly committed to providing its readers with news items that are important to them, and often presents its audience with items that break the cycles of negative news that are so pervasive.
This is to say that the Meadowlands Urban News often shines a bright light on Soweto’s numerous commendable achievements and world-class attractions. The paper also opens itself to public dialogue, and invites readers to write in and express their views through a letters section.
With a sizeable print order of 27 500 copies, the Meadowlands Urban News reaches a significant population of household expenditure decision makers, making the publication a highly effective marketing channel for businesses to showcase their retail and service offerings.
