Johannesburg like any metropolitan city is geographically divided into North, South, East and West. Suburbs in these particular geographical areas are the product of urban sprawl and they generally have different demographics. The suburbs to the south of the city are mainly blue collar neighbourhoods and situated closer to some townships. It is in the south west part of the city where you find Soweto, a township constructed during apartheid for housing displaced black South Africans then living in areas designated for white settlement. To the south of Johannesburg is also Lenasia, a predominantly Asian neighbourhood which was constructed during apartheid specifically to house Asians.
Suburbs of the South have one newspaper which the community calls “The South’s own paper”. Together with the Sandton Chronicle it is believed to be one of the oldest publications owned by Caxton. This newspaper is the Southern Courier. The Southern Courier serves the local community by reporting on local issues of importance and newsworthy events such as extraordinary achievements by ordinary people in the South. This newspaper has also developed a good reputation for its various community service initiatives leading to a valuable relationship with schools and other non-profit organisations in the South of Johannesburg. Business houses also use this newspaper to reach target markets at very competitive rates.
