Limpopo

Limpopo lies within the great curve of the Limpopo River and is South Africa’s northern most province. It is a region of great scenic beauty with contrasts that range from true bushveld country to majestic mountains, unspoilt wilderness, primeval indigenous forests and patchworks of farmland.

Limpopo, with a total area of 125 755 square kilometres and a population of 5.4 million people, is South Africa’s fifth-largest province, taking up 10.3 % of the country’s land area, and is often regarded as the gateway to the rest of Africa. Polokwane is the capital of Limpopo and is situated in the middle of the province. The northern half of the magnificent Kruger National Park lies in the eastern region of Limpopo.

The Phalaborwa Spatial Development Initiative (a network of rail and road corridors linked to major seaports), connects Limpopo to the Maputo Development Corridor. The aim of the Corridor is to link Limpopo directly with the Port of Maputo in Mozambique and create development and trade opportunities, particularly in the southeast. The province is rich in mineral deposits that include iron ore, diamonds, platinum, chrome, coal, antimony, copper and phosphate. Mineral reserves found in the province include gold, scheelite, emeralds, magnetite, silicon, vermiculite and mica. Mining contributes to more than a fifth of the provincial economy with major mining activities taking place in the centres of Phalaborwa and Thabazimbi.
