North West

The North West, known as the Platinum Province, lies in the northern part of South Africa on the Botswana border. It is fringed by the Kalahari Desert in the West, Gauteng Province to the East and the Free State to the South. It is a flat region that largely consists of scattered trees and grassland. In the north east of the province, the Magaliesburg mountain range extends about 130 kilometres from Pretoria to Rustenburg, with the Vaal River forming the province’s southern border.

The North West, with a total area of 106 512 square kilometres, is South Africa’s fourth-smallest province and takes up 8.7% of the country’s land area. It has a population of 3.5 million people.

The capital of the Province is Mahikeng (formerly known as Mafeking) – a town well-known for the famous siege that took place during the Boer War, which ended in a victory for the British. It is located near the Botswana border and forms a single urban area with Mmabatho, the neighbouring town. The biggest cities in the North West are Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom. Other main urban centres in the area include Rustenburg and Brits.

More than 80% of the Province’s economic activity takes place in the southern region, between Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Rustenburg in the east. Major tourist attractions in the province include the Pilanesberg National Park, the Madikwe Game Reserve, the Rustenburg Nature Reserve and the world famous Sun City – one of the world’s biggest entertainment centres.
