The Rising Sun newspapers were founded in 1986 by CEO, Vijay Maharaj, who made a firm commitment that the stable would be dedicated to the effort to help promote a non-sexist and non-racial South Africa. Of course, given the oppressive apartheid-era laws, this was no small feat, and the Rising Sun stable is today proud of their past contributions as well as their current role in the communities it serves.
Due to the racial segregation still in place in the 1980s, Vijay recognised the need for reputable community newspapers to address the unique experiences of residents living in “Indian-only areas”, and his response to the problem (the various Rising Sun titles) proved a hit right from the start: the previously neglected Indian audience now had a news source that spoke about events occurring within their own communities. Audiences of the Rising Sun publications reside in Chatsworth, Verulam, Phoenix, Tongaat, Overport and the Mid-South Coast in KwaZulu-Natal; and in Mayfair, Fordsburg, Lenasia and Laudium in Gauteng.
The Overport region began life as a large estate in then colonial Natal, and was given its current name by the 8th mayor of Durban, William Hartely. Today, the estate forms an entire suburb situated to the west of the Durban CBD, and borders on Berea. Given its close proximity to the city centre, many Overport residents work and socialise in Durban – an ever vibrant and constantly evolving world-class city.
As an ever-popular newspaper, the editorial team of the Overport Rising Sun have worked tirelessly to fulfil Vijay’s mission of providing high quality local and community news, schools news, municipal news, local sports fixtures and results, entertainment news and more. The Overport Rising Sun is dedicated to maintaining its impressive reputation for journalistic excellence.
Additionally, the publication affords advertisers the opportunity to access the shopping community of Overport through various advertising products that are strong, effective and consistent.
