Western Cape
The Western Cape is the fourth largest of the nine provinces in South Africa in terms of both area and population, with an area of 129,449 square kilometres and 6.2 million inhabitants. This province has coasts bordering the Indian and Atlantic oceans. The Western Cape is also best known for the port city of Cape Town, set beneath Table Mountain. It’s in Table Bay where you find Robben Island, which is a notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela but is now a living museum. Farther afield, winelands surround historical towns like Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl.
The Western Cape has also recorded tremendous economic growth over the years. The province’s real economy is dominated by manufacturing and commercial agriculture. Economic statistics also show that this province produces 55% to 60% of South Africa’s agricultural exports, valued at more than R7 billion a year. The sector is also one of the fastest growing of the economy.
